Advent 2, December 8
Introduction – Wendy Johnson

Scripture: Luke 3:1-6 -Carol Wetzel
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,
‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
   make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
   and the rough ways made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” ’

Light of the Advent Candles Rehn’s
We celebrate the second Sunday of Advent, by lighting the candles of Hope and Peace. We celebrate God’s promise of peace in the world. Despite the wars and distress, the poverty and oppression, God has spoken that there will be peace.

A voice cries out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord.”
A choir sings in the silence, “Come, Emmanuel.”
Every valley shall be filled. Every heart shall be made whole,
for peace is stronger than turmoil, and love is louder than hate.

(Light 2 candles)

As we light our second Advent candle,
we pray for the holy peace of God.
Come now, O Child of Mary.
Come now, O Prince of Peace.

Let us Pray: Holy God, our hope and strength, by the power of your Spirit prepare the way in our hearts for the coming of your Word, so that we may see the glorious signs of your promise fulfilled; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
